Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan is a good character — she’s young, she’s complex and she’s driven by curiosity. Casey shows you what it must feel like to be a detective — desperate to piece things together and surrounded by other people doing the same thing. She shows you how detectives clash and play power games with each other. Here, a killer is prowling the streets of London, and cops are prowling around each other — there are deep layers of resentment and suspicion. It’s told by Kerrigan, who is a superb noter of details, as you might expect — about her own life, as well as the case she’s working on.
