Canoe conman John Darwin could be sent back to jail after breaching his parole conditions to visit a woman in the Ukraine.
Darwin fled to Panama as he and his wife Anne tried to claim £1 million in life insurance and pension payments by faking his death in a canoe accident.
Both were sentenced to six years in jail. Darwin, who was freed on licence after serving three years, flew abroad after meeting a 25-year-old on a foreign brides website. The 63-year-old was spotted in the Ukrainian mining town of Sumy with the woman, named as Anna. A witness said: “Anna came to Darwin’s hotel and spent time with him before dinner.”
When told the authorities would be in touch when he returned, Darwin said: “Well, I’ll have an even bigger headache then.”
The probation service said: “Any offender subject to licence supervision is required to gain permission to travel outside the UK. Any offender who travels without permission will be subject to recall to custody.”
