Driverless cars are being trialled by the government this week in a bid to save motorists time in driving – but it is not the first time crazy car inventions have hit the headlines.
Flying cars, propel-driven vehicles and even a hovering car are some of the quirky ideas inventors thought would be a success on the roads.
These images show some of the failed attempts at re-designing the car which failed to take off.

Flying cars are a prominent feature in some of the designs, including a graphic design impression of a bizarre three-wheeled vehicle capable of turning into an aircraft and soaring above congested roads.
In 2005 an Israeli man was photographed sailing an improvised raft constructed from a raft and barrels.
The police found large supplies of food and water on the raft, indicating he was planning for a long stay at sea on the vehicle.
The creator later revealed he was trying to make his childhood dream of travelling to the sea on a vessel capable of carrying vehicles through the ocean.
