What is a hotspot?

Hotspots can be found in a wide variety of public places
5 April 2012

A hotspot is an access point in a public location such as a café, hotel or station where you can connect to the internet at broadband speed using a BT Fusion Wi-Fi handset, wireless-enabled laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA).

Hotspots use Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). They broadcast a standard wireless frequency (up to 100 metres for laptops and 25 metres for BT Fusion handsets) that connects your equipment to the location's internet connection. It's that simple!

BT hotspots are identifiable by the distinctive BT Openzone sign.

You'll find them in a wide range of locations: airport lounges and terminals, bars and pubs, BT payphones, cafes/coffee shops, clubs, colleges, conference centres and exhibition venues, health clubs, hotels, law courts, libraries, museums, motorway service stations, railway stations, restaurants, shopping areas/stores, town halls, universities and even some British Airways lounges worldwide!
