Police in Australia have raided the home of the man rumoured to have created the virtual currency bitcoin, according to reports.

Officers raided the house of Craig Wright, who Wired magazine said was most likely to be the real person behind Satoshi Nakamoto, the mythical figure that first released bitcoin’s code.

The identity of Nakamoto has remained a mystery ever since the emergence of the crypto-currency six years ago.

Wired’s investigations were based on leaked emails and documents, including what was claimed to be a transcript between White and the Australian tax authorities.

“Either Wright invented bitcoin, or he’s a brilliant hoaxer who very badly wants us to believe he did,” the magazine said.

Reports said the Australian Federal Police denied the raids had anything to do with bitcoin.

Wright is listed as the chief executive of DeMorgan, a group of alternative currency companies – the first of which was founded in 2009 – which says on its website that it is eyeing a flotation on the Australian stock market.

Wright is also named as executive vice president of strategy development for the UK Centre for Strategic Cyberspace and Security Science, helping government bodies secure their computer systems.
