Asos hires another old hand from M&S

7 August 2013

The revolving door at Asos has continued on its circuit, with the online clothing retailer hoping to bring some stability to its boardroom by hiring the former finance director of Marks & Spencer.

Ian Dyson, 51, who also led the demerger of Punch Taverns in 2011, is joining Asos as senior independent director in October, making him the latest hire from M&S.

His former colleague, Kate Bostock, the high street giant’s ex-head of general merchandise, left her role of executive director of product and trading at Asos in July after just seven months.

Asos chief executive Nick Robertson hinted that 56-year-old Bostock’s age may have also been a factor in her exit. He said: “Strategy wasn’t the issue. It was more about cultural fit and time of life.”

Bostock added to the series of departures from Camden-based Asos in the past year, including international director Jon Kamaluddin, buying chief Caren Downie and human resources head Michelle Emmerson.

However, Asos has also been hiring rapidly and the exits have not halted the meteoric rise in its sales and profits globally. While its shares fell by 31p to 4941p today, they have powered ahead by 83% this year.

Dyson is also a director at betting firm Betfair.

The entertainment retailer HMV has hired former Vodafone executive James Coughlan to lead its digital business and the relaunch of its website in October.
