Child’s play: £3bn toy sales boom

21 January 2014

Kids’ blockbusters Postman Pat and Peter Rabbit at the cinema plus the World Cup in Brazil and stronger consumer confidence will help the UK’s toy industry grow to be worth almost £3 billion this year.

The British Toy & Hobby Association, which opened its annual Toy Fair at Kensington’s Olympia today, said parents’ spending on toys this year will revert to 2012 levels, following a 1% fall in the value of the UK toy industry last year.

Spider-Man, Transformers 4, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Lego at the cinema are also set to drive a £36 million surge in film-related toys.

Toymakers expect to sell £14 million of World Cup-related games this year. But building sets and action figures will be the items most added to toy-boxes, with a 10% rise in sales predicted for the latter.

But the BTHA said 45% of toy sales by volume cost £5 or less.

“Whilst it’s too complex a market to be making any claims about 2014 being a vintage year, the forecast shows there are a number of factors in place to suggest a stronger year than 2013,” said Natasha Crookes from the BTHA.
