A mild January has hit clothing sales in a mixed start to the New Year for the High Street, the CBI said today.

Its latest distributive trades survey showed a net balance of 55% of clothing and footwear retailers reporting lower sales against a year earlier.

Overall sales were modestly up on last year as furniture stores and grocers fared better but shoppers remain “cautious”, the CBI said.

Tightening household budgets were underlined by a record Christmas week for discount retailer Poundland, which served more than seven million customers. Nearly a quarter of its shoppers are now middle class, it said.
