Huawei booms in UK

5 October 2012

Huawei, the privately owned Chinese telecom equipment company, is growing fast in Britain with revenues surging 12% to £315.2 million last year.

Accounts at Companies House for Huawei Technologies Limited (UK) show a pre-tax profit of £7.9 million against £6.6 million a year earlier.

Most of Huawei’s income comes from selling telecoms equipment to the big mobile and fixed-line operators.

The Chinese group has committed to invest £1.3 billion in the UK over the next five years, with plans to increase its workforce by almost double to 1500.

Chief executive and founder Ren Zhengfei also held talks in London with Prime Minister David Cameron last month.

Huawei’s expansion in Western markets has provoked controversy because of rumours it has links to the Chinese military, something that the company has always denied.

There were suggestions that some in Westminster were concerned about Huawei when it was was part of a consortium which bid to provide mobile coverage on the Tube.

But those close to Huawei dismissed such talk and pointed out that Transport for London decided against any mobile network.

The accounts said Huawei is “well positioned to maintain its sales growth” despite “a challenging and competitive environment”, and heavy spending to recruit more experienced staff.
