India and China flights fuel boom in passenger numbers at Heathrow

11 October 2013

Heathrow again packed more passengers into its terminals last month as busy flights saw flyer numbers rise 3.4% to 6.6 million.

More airlines using larger planes, such as the A380, pushed the average number of passengers on each flight at Heathrow, whose runways are operating at full capacity, to 164, up 1.5% on September 2012.

Traffic to China and India was up 13.4% and 12.3% respectively. Next month, a new five-times-a-week route is to be launched between Heathrow and the Philippines, the first in over a decade.

But Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews said: “Because Heathrow is full, it can take many years to achieve new routes like this one. Linking British businesses to trading opportunities in key emerging markets is vital, and without a larger hub airport the UK can expect to fall behind in the global race for trade, jobs and economic growth.”
