Nike’s push to claim a bigger share of the female fitness fanatic’s pound is coming to the King’s Road as the sportswear giant prepares to open its first UK shop selling only womenswear.

The behemoth has trialled two stores in the US and a third in Shanghai as part of efforts to expand its womenswear sales, which account for around a fifth of revenues but is growing faster than the rest of business.

Nike will pay £435,000 a year for a 10-year lease on the store in Chelsea to landlord Martin’s Properties, which owns a string of premises on the famous road.

The move comes ahead of Nike’s plans to roll out the concept for women keen to emulate female sports stars like tennis player Maria Sharapova far more widely.

Savills director Peter Thomas, who represented Martin’s, said: “This letting further demonstrates the appeal of securing prime retail space on the King’s Road.”

Nike opens its doors in May.
