Royal Bank of Scotland is poised to appoint economist and head of the government's Airports Commission Sir Howard Davies as its new chairman, according to a report.
Davies, a former head of the City watchdog and current chairman of insurance firm Phoenix, is expected to join the state-backed lender in the summer, the Financial Times reported.
An announcement could come as early as this week, when RBS reports its full-year results, the FT said.
RBS declined to comment on the report.
Davies would take over from Sir Philip Hampton, who is to become the chairman of pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline.
As the head of the Airports Commission, Davies has been deliberating over options to boost the UK's airport capacity.
The Commission is due to make a final recommendation after the general election in May.
Davies ran the Financial Services Authority between 1997 and 2003, before taking the helm at the London School of Economics and Political Science until 2011.
He resigned from his post at the LSE after admitting "errors of judgment" over the university's links with Libya and the Gaddafi regime.
