American fast food giant Subway today vowed to open 30 new stores in London in 2014 as part of plans to almost double the number of its shops in the UK and Ireland by 2020.

The sandwich franchise, which already has around 240 stores in the capital, says the plans will create in the region of 360 new London jobs this year.

Subway is aiming to expand its UK and Ireland shop count to 3000, from 1731 currently, within six years in a move it claims will create roughly 13,000 more jobs.

Mike Charest, Subway’s assistant regional director for Europe, said UK and Ireland sales had risen 3.5% last year, and the improving outlook for the economy was “playing a role” in the company’s expansion. He said Subway had also “done a lot of work during the slowdown around value”.
