Revenue boost: Twitter was helped by the World Cup

Revenues have more than doubled at Twitter after the social media giant’s decision to create new features on its site for the World Cup in Brazil paid off.

Twitter incorporated live results into users’ main timeline page and created simple links for people to follow players in all the leading teams.

Turnover jumped 124% jump in the last three months and user numbers also rose strongly by 16 million to 271 million — the fastest rate of growth since the first quarter of 2013.

The share price soared by a third, clawing back losses in recent months, as investors’ fears about slowing growth were dispelled.

672 million tweets were sent during the World Cup, with Germany’s 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil the single most tweeted-about event with 35.6 million, eclipsing the final.

Chief executive Dick Costolo said: “By developing new product experiences, like the one we built around the World Cup, we believe we can extend Twitter’s appeal to an even broader audience.”

The UK is Twitter’s most valuable market after America.
