JD Sports: small upswing in sales bucks predictions

Rival sport retailers are hurting from England's failure to make it to Euro 2008, but John David is still kicking.

The company behind JD Sports told investors today like-for-like sales in the seven weeks to the end of May "marginally improved". This defies predictions the industry would suffer from England's absence.

JD specialises in sport fashion, whereas rivals JJB Sports and Sports Direct sell gear with a more practical edge such as football kit. In its last financial year to end-February, it pushed sales up more than 4%, better than its two main rivals can boast.
