Shoppers stay away from John Lewis

John Lewis saw a 10.3% drop in sales through its department stores in the last week as the consumer downturn really started to bite.

The group pointed out it was up against strong figures last year when sales of flowers and gifts rose in the run-up to Mother's Day.

The supermarkets side, Waitrose, saw a 1.3% fall in sales.
