Crestfallen: Australia’s Nick Kyrgios after his Wimbledon defeat
4 July 2017

As I sat down to watch the first day of Wimbledon yesterday, I was excited at the prospect of watching some of the best players in tennis. That did not include Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, however, who retired injured from his first-round match against Pierre Hugues-Herbert of France.

While no one likes to see a player hurt, I had little sympathy for

Kyrgios, a player who often shows his contempt for the game, from arguing with umpires to appearing to throw matches in protest. On this occasion, it was evident that Kyrgios was not prepared for the tournament as his opponent, ranked 70th in the world, cruised to a two-set lead.

It makes me wonder why he became a professional in the first place. Undeniably, Kyrgios is a terrific talent but he only shows this in glimpses.

His early departure will come as no surprise but I hope he changes his attitude towards tennis soon, otherwise I fear he will be consigned to the list of “could-have beens”.
