Evening Standard Comment: Volodymyr Zelensky’s uncomfortable questions for the UN
“Where is the security that the Security Council needs to guarantee?” President Volodymyr Zelenksy’s address to the UN Security Council was not only a powerful plea on behalf of his people, it delivered some uncomfortable home truths to his audience.
His anguish was directed at an international body dedicated to solving global problems by peaceful means. Yet that institution hosts a member state — one with a permanent seat on the Security Council no less — that has invaded a sovereign country and committed what is widely believed to amount to war crimes.
His question is a fair one. While the West is expected to levy further sanctions on the Kremlin, in the meantime ordinary Ukrainians, who have resisted a wholesale invasion of their homeland, face the fight of their lives in the east of the country and further horrors.
London’s world-leading universities
It is not only University Challenge where London institutions are coming out on top. The latest QS World University Rankings named the Royal College of Music as the world’s leading institution for performing arts.
The Royal College of Art was ranked top for art and design for an eighth successive year, while University College London finished first for education. London institutions also came in the top 10 for medicine.
In the face of a pandemic and a challenging environment for higher education, London’s universities have proven themselves again to be world-leading institutions in keeping with a global city.
