Safari: A Photicular Book

By Carol Kaufmann and Dan Kainen

(Workman, £16.99)

As you open each page, an image of a safari animal appears, with the most extraordinary realism, to move right before your eyes. A cheetah bounds at high speed through a plain, a black rhino trots slowly, a gorilla munches, a giraffe marches. An elephant flaps its ears vigorously.

It’s an ultra-sophisticated version of those lift-the-flap storybooks small children love so much and it’s done using a combination of something called lenticular-based technology, precision sliding lenses and original four-colour imagery. Each pic is accompanied by a short essay and some vital stats.

Did you know that “necking” is the term used when male giraffes biff their heads into each other’s chest and shoulders to compete for the ladies? Or that gorillas use branches to test water depth and to build bridges? A gift of a book in every sense.
