Four portraits of family life make up the shortlist for a £35,000 art prize.

The paintings in the running for this year’s BP Portrait Award were chosen from 2,667 entries from 88 countries.

Central Saint Martins art teacher Miriam Escofet is shortlisted for a portrait of her mother, called An Angel At My Table, far left, which she said was an attempt to “transmit an idea of the Universal Mother”.

Also nominated is American artist Felicia Forte, for a painting of her sleeping boyfriend, above, and Ania Hobson’s portrait of herself with her sister-in-law and fellow painter Stevie Dix, top left.

The fourth shortlisted work, left, is by Chinese artist Zhu Tongyao and shows the son of the family who looked after him while he studied in Italy.

National Portrait Gallery director Dr Nicholas Cullinan, who also chairs the judging panel, said the competition was “an annual celebration of contemporary painted portraiture”.

He said judges would weigh up technique, structure and overall impact and added: “I am delighted with this year’s shortlist and the final selection of works for the exhibition, and congratulate all the artists involved.”

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the gallery on Monday June 11 and will also get a commission worth £7,000 to paint a new work.
