Bridget Christie, Soho Theatre - comedy review

The witty side of feminism from Bridget Christie
11 November 2013

By the time Bridget Christie finishes her extended Soho run in January, this year’s Foster’s Award winner will have made more than 6,000 fans laugh. Not O2 Arena level but certainly Hammersmith Apollo status. And judging by this weekend’s show, a large proportion will be women moved and amused by her potent set.

Christie is dismissive of the notion but she makes feminism funny, sugaring her equal-rights clarion call with consummate clownish silliness.

One moment she is mocking veteran racing driver Stirling Moss’s sexism, the next she is a Brontë sister fumbling with a quill — the show’s title, A Bic for Her was inspired by the marketing of pastel-hued pens.

This show truly touches a nerve. Female cheers frequently erupted, particularly when she revealed how she moves supermarket lad mags from shelves to bins — “ethical filing”, as she calls it. And where else will you hear a seriocomic tribute to teenage Taliban opponent Malala Yousafzai?

Hopefully this has killed the debate about whether women can be humorous, “Dead, dead, dead” as Christie might say. A winning show and a pivotal one. Oh, and men will also like it. If they don’t they should be dumped in the bin too.
