Simon Cowell would struggle to fault Frisky and Mannish

27 June 2012

If you like shows where you feel compelled to do the Macarena then Frisky and Mannish are just the thing. Laura Corcoran and Matthew Jones ooze so much energy and fizz it is hard to resist when they ask you to get involved.

Not even my PhD in advanced curmudgeonliness offered protection. They even had me slightly shimmying.

There is nothing astoundingly original about rejigging The Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud for camp effect but, boy, do they do it well. It is also fun playing spot the tune. How quickly can you identify the TV theme sung in Berlin cabaret style? The corseted Corcoran has a simply stupendous voice and keyboardist Jones is no slouch in the foghorn department. This was a try-out for the Edinburgh Fringe but most of Scotland probably got a freebie last night.

The concept is that they are offering pop careers advice but apart from the opening dancing and some excruciating closing participation - hilarious if you are not picked - this is just a way to link their parodies. Look out for Madonna's entire oeuvre in three minutes and an exquisitely cruel dissection of Florence Welch. Not deep but so entertaining. Simon Cowell would struggle to fault this.
