BFI London Film Festival: Hidden gem of the day – The Stopover

Nick Roddick picks his lesser known must-see for Thursday October 13

Afghanistan syndrome – what it’s like to be there vs what it’s like to family members who stay home – has been a frequent topic for European cinema recently.

This second film by the Coulin sisters, Delphine and Muriel (who had separate film careers before joining up to direct 17 Girls in 2011), with its focus on three female soldiers who stop off with their unit for a debrief on the way home, introduces several fresh dimensions, from the abrupt culture-clash of the debrief (in a luxury esort hotel in Cyprus), via the survivor’s guilt over the death of a comrade to the gender issues of a women in a very macho army. It also rings neat changes on that old film favourite: a night out that goes seriously wrong.

Showing: Haymarket Cinema, 19:00
