Black Widow trailer: Scarlett Johansson stages explosive family reunion in first glimpse of new film

Harry Fletcher3 December 2019

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff has finally been given her time in the spotlight, with the first trailer for Black Widow released this morning.

Fans have been calling for the former KGB assassin and current agent of SHIELD to be given her own solo movie for years, and talks about a possible standalone have been going on since 2010. The first clip gives a flavour of what fans can expect.

It opens with flashbacks to Romanoff's early days in the MCU, as she says: “I used to have nothing. And then I got this job, this family. But nothing lasts forever.”

Later we see her stage a family reunion after fighting with her ‘sister’ Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. Romanoff also reunites with family members Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei Vostokoff (David Harbour), working together against a new, unspecified threat.

Johansson previously revealed that Black Widow is facing a crisis in her life at the time of the film.

“Where we find Natasha in her life at this point is very specific,” Johansson told EW at Comic-Con back in July. “She really is in a dark place where she’s got no one to call and nowhere to go. She’s really grappling with her own self… In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”

As well as starring in the film, Johansson acts as executive producer. Cate Shortland, known for her work on Lore and Berlin Syndrome, directs.

Black Widow is released in the UK on May 1
