High Concept

Plot Believing her head to be on the block, corporate bitch Julie Styron (Stockard Channing) overreacts and fires her punkish assistant (Julia Stiles) for a blameless incident. It turns out Channing's misread the signals and has, in fact, been promoted. By accident the two women meet later, over an uneasy drink.

Cherchez le man To drive the two women into sisterly reconciliation, who should turn up but sexually swaggering slimeball and professional headhunter Nick Harris (Fred Weller). Paula reveals a skeleton in his cupboard and things take a decidely melodramatic, darkly sexual and anti-male turn.

Sister act Though familiar from TV's West Wing, this is a rare starring role for Stockard Channing, the 'best, least-used American actress in the movies' as one critic put it, in a dream casting with Julia Stiles, probably the best young actress in Hollywood.

Go go girls Perhaps the schedules of busy actresses demanded it, but first-time director Patrick Stettner shot this film in a whirlwind 23 days, and edited it down to a bladder-friendly 83 minutes.

Verdicts 'A maliciously funny and keenly observant movie' - Rolling Stone 'Not all that entertaining despite the performances' - Greenwich Village Gazette.
