Dirty pretty film cleans up

A low-budget thriller set in a community of illegal immigrants swept the board at last night's British Independent Film Awards. Dirty Pretty Things, about murder and organ donation, won prizes for best British independent film, best director and best screenplay.

Its star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, was crowned best actor at the event in London. Other winners included Olivia Williams - who took the best actress title for her role in The Heart of Me - and John Hurt, who received an honorary prize for his contribution to the British film industry. BIFA founder Elliot Grove said: 'Britain is a real melting pot of talent.'
