Hollywood's big fat bore

10 April 2012

Paul Giamatti plays a Hollywood big shot who steals an idea from a 14-year-old's class essay and builds a blockbuster movie around it.

The kid, played by Frankie Muniz (of Malcolm in the Middle), takes off to Tinseltown for revenge. There's some mildly amusing self-satire of Hollywood's movies and mores and a dash of truth in Giamatti's sleazebag producer who buttresses his ego by humiliating those who serve it.

But it all sits uncomfortably with the unspoken premise that many a Hollywood hit has the brains of a 14-year-old behind it.
