I'm afraid of falling flat on my face, says Oscar hope Jessica Chastain

It has been an incredible year for Jessica Chastain, but the actress says her meteoric rise has been so fast that she expects to "fall flat on her face" at any moment.

This time last year, the 30-year-old US star was an unknown. But she has capped a hugely successful 12 months by earning a nomination for best supporting actress at the Oscars this month for her role in Deep South drama The Help.

She has also received much acclaim for her parts in Tree Of Life and Take Shelter, and for playing the title role of Al Pacino's docu-drama Wilde Salome.

She told AnOther magazine: "This has been a scary year ... a wonderful year. But my life is changing and I don't know what it means. All year I've been afraid of falling flat on my face, physically and metaphorically.

"At Cannes, everyone kept talking about the stairs. Oh my gosh, I was convinced: I'm going to trip on those stairs."

And on her striking looks, she is modest: "I'm not the normal idea of what a gorgeous woman is. I don't look modern."

Chastain claims she "always knew" her career was going to happen. "I'm not talking about the fame," she said. "But I knew I was going to be an actor ... But I would be really happy doing plays off Broadway for hardly any money.

"There's nothing about me that makes you think, 'movie star'. I'm just this normal girl."
