London Comedy Film Festival to champion British talent that usually ‘slips through the net’

The fifth annual London Comedy Festival launches on April 20, aiming to champion British film talent.

One of the films to be screened is The Darkest Universe starring The Inbetweeners’ Joe Thomas.

The Darkest Universe follows banker Zach in his search for his younger, annoying sister Alice who has gone missing on a canal boat along with her boyfriend Toby, played by The Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas.

BAFTA-nominated co-director Tom Kingsley told London Live: “It starts of as this kind of frustrating search where there’s absolutely no clues.

“Zach turns to doing some video blogging – he’s quite bad at it – and he’s basically an inept guy searching for some kind of hope.

“The film gets stranger and weirder as he gets a little bit more unhinged.

“It is a strange journey where you’ll learn a lot about canals and hopefully have some kind of moving conclusion.

London Comedy Film Festival director Denise Hicks said: “Everyone loves comedy. There are so many British independent films that just slip through the net – they don’t necessarily get into the multiplexes and so they don’t get picked up.

“So it is an opportunity to champion brilliant talent, like Tom and many other filmmakers as well, and just say: look, we’ve got some incredible talent here in the UK.

“Without the festival, there often isn’t the opportunity to see this stuff.”

The festival programme, which will also include French and Romanian comedies, runs from April 20 to May 1 2016 at various venues across London.
