Malice In Wonderland is a gangster flick that's gone bananas

10 April 2012

Anyone trying to make a modern version of Alice in Wonderland would be hard-pressed to imagine Danny Dyer as a taxi driver taking Alice on her adventures.

But Simon Fellows takes the risk, casting Maggie Grace as Alice, whom Dyer runs over, kidnaps and drugs.

Shot within a neon-lit cityscape that might just be night-time Sunderland, the hallucinatory adventure takes in a mysterious DJ as the Cheshire Cat and two nasty club doormen as Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Does it work? Not really. It’s too restless, too like a gangster pic that’s gone bananas. At least it tries for something different.
