OSS 117 carries on as before

Wonderful moments: Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath (Jean Dujardin) in OSS 117: Lost in Rio
10 April 2012

The sequel to the highly successful French spy spoof OSS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies carries on as before.

OSS 117 is the code name of the cravat-wearing Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath (Jean Dujardin), a camped-up version of the hero of Jean Bruce's straight-faced post-war spy novels.

As stupid as Bond is clever, OSS 117 exists in a Sixties France where chauvinism and sexism mix awkwardly with feminism and hippy politics.

The chief glory is the way its director, Michel Hazanavicius, manages to copy the thrillers of the time while taking the mickey out of them - this is funny, mischievous and sly.

Silly it certainly is but there are some wonderful moments as Hubert chases Nazis around South America and, on the way, gets mixed up in a bisexual LSD orgy.
