She's just too out of his league

She's out of my League pushes the concept a little too far
10 April 2012

The chief problem for Jim Field Smith’s debut romantic comedy is that Molly (Alice Eve) is so obviously out of airport security officer Kirk’s league. He is a wimp of the first order and Jay Baruchel plays the part like a close relation of Michael Cera, which is charming at first but becomes tiresome.

We soon wonder what on earth she sees in him, particularly when she seems delighted as, at their first grapple, he makes a nasty mess in his trousers. It’s that sort of film, combining scenes that make you flinch with a softer approach, which characterises Jay and his friends as likeable idiots.

There are laughs along the way, but the scene where Nate Torrence shaves Jay’s testicles to make him seem "more sophisticated" is not one of them.

This one is at its best when the genuinely funny JT Miller is on the screen as Jay’s most assiduous companion. It otherwise hops along no more than hopefully towards its inevitable conclusion that losers sometimes win.
