Robert Redford's Sundance Festival will return to London next year in a venue at the heart of the capital.

The celebration of independent film today announces a new partnership with Picturehouse Central, the cinema chain’s new flagship venue opening in the former Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue this summer.

John Cooper, festival director, said they had enjoyed three “successful and enjoyable years” at The 02 before taking a break this year.

But the new location for 2016 offered “a community of really engaged arthouse film fans,” he said.

He said the goal was “to connect adventurous audiences in the UK with new independent artists and work”. The event, whose dates are yet to be announced, will again focus on films premiered at its US festival.

Sundance founder Robert Redford, said: “Exploring international opportunities for... American independent storytelling is an exciting proposition.”
