Three weddings, few laughs

Director Debbie Isitt asked her cast to improvise their lines and devise their own plots for this comedy, in which three couples compete to produce the most original wedding of the year.

She shot some 150 hours of footage which has been edited down to 100 minutes.

It is an audacious idea, but an unwise one: the film isn't half as funny as it thinks it is and, though blessed with good playing, falls flat on its face for fairly long stretches.

Those vying for the prize of a £500,000 dream home and their picture on the cover of the next issue of bridal mag Confetti include Sam and Matt (Jessica Stevenson and Martin Freeman), old-fashioned romantics who opt for a Hollywood musical style send-off.

Providing stiff competition are Josef and Isabelle (Stephen Mangan and Meredith MacNeill) who are obsessed with tennis and go for a Wimbledon theme and a Cliff Richard lookalike singing in the rain.

Meanwhile naturists Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb and Olivia Colman) insist on getting hitched bare.

On hand are two gay wedding planners (Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins) to provide expert advice and tantrums, while Confetti's editor (Felicity Montagu) and publisher (Jimmy Carr) begin to regret their choice of finalists.

You can't help feeling that a professional screenplay and a tighter plotline would have eliminated the bits that don't work and made the parts that do much better.

Isitt has chosen the most difficult way out, and not quite succeeded in the task.
