Venus and Serena - film review

Maiken Baird's tantalising documentary about the Williams sisters
28 June 2013

Maiken Baird's tantalising documentary about the Williams sisters was shot mostly in 2011. At one point, Serena, beset by health problems, moans that she may soon be broke.

Her fortunes changed, literally, in 2012 (she is, of course, the current Wimbledon champion). Which makes you wish hard-hitting producer Alex Gibney (director of exposés such as Silence In The House of God) had had the clout and money to keep the cameras rolling.

The film's heroines are media-savvy, devoutly religious, politically aware. And keen to distance themselves from their promiscuous dad. They're perfect American drama queens. All that's missing is a last act.
