What to watch this week: From Over the Moon to Cordelia

It's nearly the weekend - nearly time to flop on the sofa and watch something to transport you...

Summer of 85

François Ozon’s sun-drenched adaptation of Aidan Chambers’s 1982 novel Dance on My Grave is the film the director wished he could have seen aged 17 . The story of two teenage boys and their summer fling wobbles occasionally as it treads the line between tragedy and hope but Ozon captures the intensity of young love perfectly and the central performances are flawless.

Over the Moon

This co-production between Sony Pictures and China’s Pearl Studio starts out a little flat (it’s no Pixar) but things really pick up when our grieving heroine Fei Fei builds and launches a rocket to visit the moon goddess, who is basically an intergalactic pop lunatic. The songs get better, too.

The Grand Party Hotel

This endearing documentary series transports you to a simpler time, when your biggest woe was sacrificing endless weekends to bumper-sized hen and stag dos. Available on iPlayer, it takes you inside the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, boasting 24-person rooms decked out in jaw-dropping fashion — one looks like the set of Jungle Run, another has a plunge pool down the middle. It’s absolute carnage but the lovely staff and heart-warming guest stories make it perfect comfort viewing.

Cordelia

Antonia Campbell-Hughes and Johnny Flynn shine in this eerie thriller. Cordelia, a timid semirecluse who is haunted by survivor’s guilt from a past trauma, becomes entangled with her neighbour, Frank. The two characters are deeply drawn — despite her anxiety, Cordelia is a tentatively sly straight-talker, while Frank’s friendly facade veils something darker. Soon, reality and hallucinations combine, keeping us second-guessing until the end.
