Amazon Games has announced their first-ever AAA title, a free-to-play competitive team-based shooter named Crucible, coming to PC.

The online shooter will pit teams of players against each other in what seems like a blend of PvP and PvE action.

Choosing from a roster of hero Hunters characters, players will work together to chase down opponents, take on hostile creatures, and capture objectives, all on a suitably dangerous planet.

Your reason for being on this dangerous planet? Much like the film Avatar, you need some precious resource called Essence, which amplifies hunters' powers.

There will be 10 different hunters to choose from at launch, each suiting different playstyles with unique weapons and abilities.

So far we know about Earl, an interstellar trucker who fits the role of 'Tank' nicely, a DPS hunter called Summer and a support-focused character called Bugg.

Typically, the more you play the more you'll earn Essence which will help you level up each hunter's abilities.

At launch, there will be three modes: Heart of the Hives, Harvester Command, and Alpha Hunters.

In Heart of the Hives, two four-player teams battle giant boss Hives that spawn throughout the world.

You'll go head-to-head with other players, and each Hive contains a valuable Heart. The first team to capture three Hearts wins the match.

Harvester Command sounds like a 'King of the Hill mode', where two teams of eight players must capture and hold Harvesters, locations spread across the map, to earn the most points.

The Alpha Hunters mode seems like a team deathmatch, as eight teams of two fight to be the final duo standing.

“In Crucible, every match is different, and players’ choices really matter,” said Christoph Hartmann, vice president at Amazon Games.

“Every opponent, team, and mode poses unique dangers, and no two matches are the same, so players must constantly adapt to everything the world and the other teams throw at them".

Crucible is being developed by Relentless Studios, a Seattle-based development team of Amazon Games.

Current Amazon Games projects include New World, an MMO set on a supernatural continent in the 17th century and the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings MMO.

Crucible will be available for free on PC, May 20, via the official website
