Joe Lycett review: A true comedy craftsman

Joe Lycett's show: I’m About to Lose Control
Bruce Dessau11 June 2018

Joe Lycett’s speciality is mischief and there is plenty in his latest show.

The title, I’m About to Lose Control and I Think Joe Lycett, is a reminder that he is not averse to a stupidly punny joke either. The panel-game star certainly crams lots in, from inviting fans to tweet smutty celebrity names during the interval to airing his artistic ambitions. The former graphic designer recently submitted a childlike sculpture to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Would they have enough of a sense of humour to accept it?

Beyond the boasts about his new ritzy Birmingham abode, his gripes about the inane descriptions of Farrow & Ball paints and a running gag about a Chuckle brother, there is also politics. Lycett was irked by Tom Daley’s Barclays-sponsored tweeting at 2017’s Pride event and reveals in hilarious detail how he skewered the diver on social media.

Elsewhere the highlight of his effortlessly effervescent set is an account of his correspondence with RBS, which builds to a positively poetic finale. Lycett is a true comedy craftsman whether the Royal Academy appreciates him or not.
