Hackney Colliery Band - Sharpener, review: 'rollicking oompah-pah of British mining bands'

Brassy: East London funsters, the Hackney Colliery Band
Jane Cornwell29 July 2016

More good brass times from the East London funsters, whose third album takes the heat of New Orleans marching bands, the verve of eastern European wedding bands and the rollicking oompah-pah of British mining bands and mixes it all up with jazz, rock, percussion and electronica.

As ever, horns are the focus, with the nine-piece blasting and boogying their way through a wide-ranging instrumental set of originals and covers, giving Nirvana’s Heart-Shaped Box a playful revisioning and turning Three Trapped Tiger’s Cramm into a contrapuntal wig-out.

Of the new tunes, When You Know is a jazzy crash of contrasting styles, and Bread and Circuses a rhythmic and uplifting dance floor rave.

Catch them when they play Battersea Arts Centre, SW11 on August 2.
