Christmas albums can be much of a muchness – sleighbells this, snowballs that – but country starlet Kacey Musgraves has a few original thoughts to offer.

She wants us to have A Willie Nice Christmas on a duet with her pal Willie Nelson: “And may we all stay higher than the angel at the top of the tree.

If that one goes over the kids’ heads, they might get some new ideas for the letter to Santa from I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.

Even when the songs are overfamiliar, there are different musical touches dotted throughout, such as the fiddle solo on Let It Snow and the Hawaiian sounds of Mele Kalikimaka.

It’s traditional with a cheeky twist, which makes it an ideal winter ear warmer.
