Song for Our Daughter was due for release in August but as many global pop stars have delayed their albums due to the ongoing pandemic, Laura Marling has boldly done the opposite. And boy, do we owe her a thank you for it.

The 30-year-old has unveiled the record early to “at the very least [...] entertain, and at its best, provide some sense of union” and she breezes through this mission on both counts, delivering a calming, reassuring collection which is undoubtedly one of her most superb albums yet.

End of the Affair showcases Marling’s instantly recognisable vocals with just her guitar for her company. Folk storytelling features more frequently than confessional, and Marling carries a confidence that befits her 12 years in the music industry without sounding weary. On the sumptuous title track, Marling offers advice for a girl whose childhood is fading into adolescence, her soaring voice joined by lavish strings and harmonious backing vocals.

There are nods to her influences throughout; exquisite piano ballad Blow By Blow is a homage to Paul McCartney while Alexandra was inspired by Leonard Cohen’s Alexandra Leaving.

The gorgeous For You, recorded at home with her boyfriend, ends things on a romantic, hopeful note. “I wear a picture of you, just to keep you safe,” she wistfully sings in what inevitably feels like a timely tribute.
