Liam Gallagher review: As you were... but a tad too quiet

Forty-five minute queues for the bars and weedy sound levels made for a frustrating experience at Liam Gallagher’s big show.

At least the 40,000 thirsty fans were not disappointed by a resurgent Gallagher, whose belated solo career was last year’s most effective comeback.

After 12 months on the road, his band sounded as good as any Oasis line-up, which was just as well as this performance was dominated by mid-Nineties tunes. Rock ’n’ Roll Star and Morning Glory were ragged and raw but not loud enough. With the audience chanting along, though, the communal choruses fuelled a balmy evening of nostalgia featuring a generous showing of album favourites, singles and a forgotten b-side.

The solo material got a bit overlooked as Gallagher drew on a handful of songs, including the squally groove of near-hit Wall of Glass and the more mature and mellow Bold. He didn’t need to do much to rouse this crowd — a pair of maracas would sometimes be raised to signify a moment of peak Britpop such as the storming Slide Away.

Playing for only 80 minutes, Gallagher didn’t stick around long but his work was done with the tender yet triumphant Live Forever and Wonderwall.
