Marilyn Manson - Heaven Upside Down, review

David Smyth6 October 2017

American life is scary enough right now without Marilyn Manson sticking his oar in. Nevertheless, the horror rocker’s 10th album may offer some useful catharsis for those who feel like screaming.

Having edged close occasionally to glam rock and something approaching catchiness in the past, here he offers zero reasons to be cheerful.

Revelation #12 grinds along, awkward and distorted, while We Know Where You Fucking Live is absolutely ferocious.

KILL4ME passes for the lightest moment, an unfriendly nod towards Garbage’s electro-rock.

However, his fury is frustratingly more interested in demonic wordplay than in razing anything specific.

Smashing together sex, violence and the Bible, he sings about “Cocaine and Abel” on SAY10 (which sounds like “Satan”, geddit?). Ironically, for someone so committed to shock values, it makes him all too predictable.
