The Cure's Robert Smith has been announced as the curator of this year's Meltdown festival at the Southbank Centre.

The revered musician will oversee the lineup of the arts and music event, which takes place over 10 nights between June 15 and 24.

Smith is the latest name to take charge of the festival, following the likes of John Peel, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono and David Byrne.

M.I.A curated the 2017 festival, welcoming performers such as Young Fathers, Giggs and Soulwax.

“I am honoured and excited to be curating the 25th Meltdown Festival," Robert Smith said.

"More than 30 of my all time favourite artists – some of the most exciting, inspirational, intense and influential performers of the last 40 years – will make sure this 10 night extravaganza at London’s Southbank Centre is the ‘must see’ event of the summer!”

Meltdown festival has come to be regarded as one of the most acclaimed celebrations of alternative music and arts since launching back in 1993; 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the festival.

Tickets for this year's festival go on general sale on March 15 and can be bought here.

Smith is also performing with the Cure in London this summer, as part of the British Summer Time concert series.
