Enticing electronic textures: Hannah Georgas

Canadians might laugh at us for booking Hannah Georgas as part of the First Fifty series of London gigs next week. It’s a new three-day event organised by The Great Escape, the Brighton festival for fresh hotshots that’s usually a good place to spot the next big thing.

Ontario’s Georgas, however, is a 33-year-old who released her third album this summer, and has already been nominated several times each for Juno (Canada’s Brits) and Polaris (Canada’s Mercury) awards.

If you’ve noticed her at all in this country, it may have been when her 2012 song Millions appeared on the closing credits of an episode of the hit TV show Girls. Still, better discover her late than never.

While she used to offer more traditional singer-songwriter fare on piano and acoustic guitar, on For Evelyn, named after her 100-year-old grandmother, she’s delving increasingly into enticing electronic textures.

Produced by Graham Walsh of acclaimed Canadian electronica band Holy Fuck, Her songs Rideback and Waste give her gentle voice a striking backdrop of digital beats and layers of saxophone. They’re more than good enough to earn her belated buzzworthy status in the UK.
