Wilco – Schmilco review: ‘a welcome minor addition to their catalogue’

The American rock group offer a loose new album with simple appeal
Much lighter: Wilco have moved away from the torturous creation of 2001's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with Schmilco

Wilco were known for the torturous process of releasing their classic 2001 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which ended up as a documentary, but are much lighter on their feet these days.

Wilco - Schmilco

Last year’s cheekily titled Star Wars album was a hasty free download, and on this follow-up, all of the 12 songs but one hover around the three minute mark or less. The jagged guitars of Locator fade out just as they’re getting going, and Common Sense is similarly loose, its twisting guitar lines giving a sense of having been thrown out swiftly rather than agonised over.

Normal American Kids and If I Ever Was a Child have the simplest appeal, acoustic, swaying and pretty.

It’s a welcome minor addition to a mighty back catalogue.
