Never mind the B**bican

Tom Teodorczuk5 April 2012

Sid Vicious would be mortified. Punk rock, the raucous voice of rebellion in the Seventies, is to be celebrated with an exhibition at one of Britain's most august arts institutions.

The Barbican Centre will examine the influence of punk art and fashion, with exhibits ranging from the iconic Sex Pistols record covers designed by Jamie Reid to clothes belonging to The Clash.

The exhibition is one of 25 events to be held at the Barbican next year to mark each year of the venue's existence. Other highlights include a production of Chekhov's Three Sisters in Russian performed by theatre company Cheek By Jowl and an artistic festival by controversial American theatre and opera director Peter Sellars.

The centre will mark the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth with commissions by Nixon In China composer John Adams and the Mark Morris Dance Group.

During a "Barbican birthday fortnight" between 25 February and 10 March there will be a birthday gala concert of Mozart piano concertos and Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis and an exhibition of work by cutting edge Danish artist Jeppe Hein in the Curve Gallery.

Sir Simon Rattle will bring the Berlin Philharmonic and musical impresario Raymond Gubbay is producing a mixed programme of his favourite music.

There will be a weekend honouring the work of classical film composer Philip Glass, including the world premiere of Book Of Longing, his 12-part music cycle based on Leonard Cohen's poems.

The Barbican, built by the City of London Corporation, opened on 3 March 1982.
