Magic and mischief are on the menu as Gwendoline Christie leads the cast in the Bridge Theatre’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Shakespeare’s comedy takes place in a fantasy world of fairies and enchantments, where King Oberon and Queen Titania rule. The fairies use magic to play with the lives of mortals, in particular four lovers who are tricked into falling in love with one another.

Artistic director Nicholas Hytner's promenade production, which takes audience members on foot into the midst of the action, is running until August 31.

The Standard’s Henry Hitchings gave the play five stars, saying that the “funny, sexy and romantic” show “has the atmosphere of a party”.

Who does Gwendoline Christie play in A Midsummer Night’s Dream?

Gwendoline Christie plays the Amazon queen Hippolyta, due to marry Duke Theseus of Athens, played by Oliver Chris. The production also has Christie playing Titania, queen of the fairies. In most productions, she would be enchanted to fall in love with Bottom, but here it is her husband King Oberon who is struck by Cupid's arrow.

Who else is in the A Midsummer Night’s Dream cast?

Hammed Animashaun plays actor Bottom, who has his head turned into a donkey's, while David Moorst plays the “shrewd and knavish sprite” Puck. The four lovers Demetrius, Helena, Hermia and Lysander are played by Paul Adeyefa, Tessa Bonham Jones, Isis Hainsworth and Kit Young.

The cast is completed by Charlotte Atkinson, Jermaine Freeman, Chipo Kureya, Francis Lovehall, Kevin McMonagle, Ami Metcalf, Jamie-Rose Monk, Felicity Montagu, Lennin Nelson-McClure, Rachel Tolzman and Jay Webb.
