Andrew Lloyd Webber and Emerald Fennell show how to make a new musical under social distancing

Andrew Lloyd Webber has given a sneak peek into his new fairytale musical.

The composer, who is working on a fresh retelling of Cinderella with Killing Eve screenwriter Emerald Fennell, shared a clip of the pair listening to a new song from the show.

Carrie Hope Fletcher stars in the upcoming musical, and Lloyd Webber can be heard on the video praising her “fantastic vocals” to which Fennell agrees: “She’s just amazing.”

The entirely new score features lyrics by David Zippel, whose previous productions include City of Angels, The Goodbye Girl and The Woman in White, and Disney films Hercules and Mulan.

While Fennell stayed on the other side of the window, Lloyd Webber has been in lockdown with his head of music, David Wilson, so they could continue working. He shared a clip of the two of them composing together, saying it was "much easier than Zoom call jamming".

The production of Cinderella was originally due to open at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in August, but the opening has now been pushed back to October – it was the first major show to do so over coronavirus fears.

The new musical will be directed by Laurence Connor and choreographed by JoAnn Hunter. The pair previously partnered together on School of Rock and Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at The London Palladium.
