Brand-new ballet production built around its stars

Matthew Bourne to base new version of Sleeping Beauty around dancers Chris Trenfield and Hannah Vassallo
16 July 2012

Dancers Chris Trenfield and Hannah Vassallo are to have a new production of the romantic ballet Sleeping Beauty created specially for them — though neither has seen the work live.

Choreographer Matthew Bourne chose them from the ensemble of his current revival at Sadler’s Wells, Play Without Words, to star as the Prince and Princess Aurora.

After radical updates of Tchaikovsky’s other famous works, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, Bourne’s new show, at Sadler’s Wells this Christmas, will see Aurora awoken after 100 years by the Prince’s kiss in the 21st century.

Vassallo, 29, of Blackheath, who has only seen the work on DVD, said: “To do something contemporary with it is amazing.” Trenfield, 24, of south-east London, said: “I’ve never seen that ballet, so hopefully it’s going to be totally fresh.”

Play Without Words, at Sadler’s Wells until August 5.
